Socializing Your White German Shepherd Puppy

Congratulations! If you own - or are thinking of owning - a white German shepherd dog, you have made an excellent choice. They are one of the most loyal, dependable and obedient breeds of dog and they have a proud heritage that goes back to 19th century Europe.

White German shepherd dogs are also considered to be among the easiest dogs to train, making them particularly suitable for families with pets and children. Once you have chosen your pet and have him home, your next step is to learn how to “socialize” your dog.

Socializing your dog includes various things – getting it used to other dogs and other people and also everyday sights, sounds and smells. Socializing is important as it can help to prevent problems in your German shepherd such as aggression, timidity and shyness. And a dog that has been thoroughly socialized is less likely to have problems with other dogs or children.

Socializing should start as soon as you get your new puppy. Ideally, you should continue this process for up to two years. The process of socialization is easier and more effective with a young puppy.

To most effectively socialize your puppy, try to begin slowly with a one-on-one interaction, gradually progressing to situations with several people or pets. Try to ensure that your puppy meets different types of people – young and old, loud and quiet. If you don’t have small children in your home, take your puppy to a park or playground.

Try to get your dog used to different everyday noises such as the doorbell, telephone, and vacuum cleaner. A dog that is being raised primarily in a rural environment should be taken into a crowded or noisy setting occasionally.

Your puppy should be exposed to different objects, as well as people. Introduce your puppy to such everyday things as bicycles, large boxes, toys and even an umbrella. It’s also recommended to take a puppy for short car rides, letting the window down occasionally.

Socializing your puppy correctly will take time and patience – but the end results are well worth it and you will understand why white German shepherds are such a delight to own and train.
