Naming your White German Shepherd Dog

Most German shepherd owners would argue that it’s just as difficult to choose the right name for their beloved pet, as it is for a new born baby. Keep in mind that the name that you choose will be used by you an approximate 30,000 times! Ideally, your dog’s name should be a reflection of his personality, character, behavior and perhaps even his heritage.

Of course, you can name your German shepherd whatever you like – although there are some factors which may make it easier to come up with the name that’s just right for your dog. Most dogs generally respond better to a one or two syllable name. You may also want to consider a name that’s easy to spell; try to avoid a name that rhymes with a command – Joe and No, for example.

If you have a big strong dog, names such as Hercules, Rambo or Moose may come naturally to mind. A dog that’s friendly or cuddly might be named Buddy, Amigo, or Faithful and a dog that’s playful, fast or energetic could well be named Rascal, Comet or Bomber. You may want to wait until you have got used to your dog and his habits or personality before deciding on a name.

Many German shepherd owners choose a name for their dog that reflects the breed’s European heritage. Some popular German names for a male dog include Otto (meaning wealthy or rich), Bruno (brown haired) and Kaiser (leader). Some popular German names for a female dog include Adele (noble), Gretchen (little pearl) and Berta (Intelligent or glorious)

German shepherds have a long and illustrious heritage and the breed has featured in several books, movies and television shows – good sources of inspiration for a suitable name. The name of the German shepherd on the Roy Rogers Show was Bullet; a German shepherd named Strongheart featured in several movies, including White Fang, and Jerry Lee starred in the movie K9.

And undoubtedly the most famous German shepherd of them all was Rin Tin Tin who starred in several movies. German shepherds have always played a big part in helping others as well – in addition to their widespread role as search and rescue dogs, the first formally trained Seeing Eye dog in the United States was named Buddy.

If you are still stuck for a name for your German shepherd, you can find many web sites which offer ideas – names are listed alphabetically or by theme. Finally, you may not want to choose the names Max, Lady or Sam – apparently these are the most popular names for dogs in the United States. You may find that more than one dog comes running!
